Garrard Mathematicians In National Competition
Congratulations to all our students who participated in the UKMT (United Kingdom Mathematics Trust) Challenge 2022. We are delighted to picture our participants here and congratulate them on their success.
The UKMT Challenge is a national competition that encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.
We had success in both the intermediate category for Years 9 and 10, with three Silver and six Bronze certificates, and also in the junior category for Years 7 and 8, with one Gold, three Silver and 26 Bronze certificates.
In particular, congratulations to Megan (pictured) for her Gold Certificate in the junior category. Megan admits to being quite nervous during the test and when the time came to get the results her eyes were glued to the screen as she waited to congratulate her friends on their awards.
"I assumed I had not got a certificate," she said, "but then the screen changed and I felt amazed I had won a Gold award and achieved the highest score in the school! This certificate meant so much to me and really made me feel more confident in my abilities."
Megan thinks the chance to take part in tests like this is very worthwhile, not just for academic success but also for students' mental wellbeing. "I am so thrilled with this award and encourage others to try their best and do well at school because it will benefit your future as well as your life now," she said.
Participating students have demonstrated exceptional maths which will be recognised by future colleges and employers.
I look forward to them developing their maths skills further in the coming years and continuing their success with the UKMT Challenge.
