'Numeracy Across the Curriculum' Initiative Launched
Our new Numeracy Across The Curriculum initiative is all about making links between Mathematics, other subjects and the real world.
It's about showing students the relevance of Mathematics to many subjects of the curriculum and outside of the classroom too, often in very practical ways.
"There is a wide misconception that Mathematics starts and ends in the Maths lessons," says Maths teacher Olubanke Feyi-Akinribide. "You often hear students ask: 'But why am I learning this?' or 'When am I ever going to use this maths?'."
In the last couple of terms, at Harris Garrard Academy we've had a very interesting and illuminating time looking at numeracy in sports, personal finance and catering.
"This term our focus is on geography. Once again, the objective being to get our students to begin to see and understand that numerical skills transcends the four walls of the maths classroom."
When you see this sign, think!
We've also introduced this Numeracy Across the Curriculum logo, pictured here. When students see the logo they will be encouraged to think about how they can apply the skills they are using in this lesson in other subjects and outside of school too.
All departments at the school are collaborating to make the initiative a success, supported by cross-curricula guidance that is being shared and discussed with different faculties.
We're using other strategies too. Recently, for example, we held a 'whole school numeracy day' which was used as a platform to introduce our Year 7 students not only to problem solving skills but also to other life skills such as perseverance and team work.
UK Maths Challenge Success
Several of our students look part in the UK Maths Challenge recently, with great results! Picture above: from left to right, Caitlin (Bronze) Liana (Silver), Shane (Bronze) and Abdul (Bronze).
