"I Have To Believe In Myself To Get There"
Harris Garrard has been very fortunate to work alongside Strengthening Minds this term, an organisation dedicated to helping young people with social and emotional issues.
Group programmes have helped our students work on a range of topics including anger management, self-esteem, choices, consequences and different reflections about behaviours which are impacting them both inside and outside of school.
During the sessions students take part in a range of activities to support different skills or needs. These include group games to build collaborative working and problem-solving. They also have private reflection time during which they write their own personal journals which capture their thoughts and responses (see pictures).
They also solve problems and work on hypothetical scenarios, discussing them as a group and resolving them together. Students are encouraged to set themselves targets and reflect on and discuss these. They develop greater emotional understanding and work on over-used or under-used emotions.
You will see here just a small example of some of the written work completed by our students as they progress through the courses and begin to make more informed and considered choices.
Students have spoken very highly of the course and have become more confident speakers, more open listeners and have developed team-building skills which will help them grow as young people.
This course has fit perfectly alongside our school mantra that ‘Learning Changes Lives’ – not only academically but through character development too.
