Hub Councils Hold Their First Meetings
Each of our Learning Hubs now has a student council which meets each half term to discuss issues of concern to students.
Members of the councils were chosen by students during elections last term (pictured). Each council is supported by a member of staff, who facilities the process and feeds back the issues discussed to the school's leadership team.
Good causes
Each hub is looking at what it will do to raise money for charity, for example, and has chosen a good cause to support. These include the disability charity Scope (Enterprise Hub), Air Ambulance (World Studies Hub) and Teenage Cancer Trust (Creative Voice Hub).
Fundraising ideas discussed by students so far include cake sales, competitions, a ‘red and white’ day and a staff quiz.
Improvements and suggestions
Students are also discussing what they would like to improve at the academy – including how they will make the changes happen and when. Ideas discussed so far include:
- More cultural awareness days around school
- Changes to lunchtime arrangements to make them fairer to all years
- A mentoring scheme for younger students, including a buddy system to build confidence in younger students
- Whether languages other than French and Spanish could be offered as options at GCSE
- A new ‘careers hub’ to offer advice about careers and everyday issues.
Suggestions for new co-curricular (after-school) clubs including a Year 11 only Debate Club, and a club where students can learn about everyday things like banking. Students also pointed out some issues with basketball hoop equipment and said this needed improving. They also raise the issue of how to challenge low-level disruption in lessons when it occurred.
Generally, students felt that the co-curricular activities were well-organised and delivered, though Year 11 students wanted to be able to take part in more clubs, despite it being their exam year.
