Brilliant Club Graduation at King's College London
Eighteen students travelled to King’s College London this month to attend the graduation ceremony of the Brilliant Club Scholars Programme, which gives students at Harris Garrard Academy the chance to study university level topics with a PhD research student.
Harris Garrard students were given the opportunity to reflect on their journey and celebrate completing the program with Dr Andy Fleming, Programme Director of the Brilliant Club.
As part of the program, students are expected to submit a 2,000 word essay on the topic: "Does Health Promotion lift the Taboo?" Most of the group did their essays on the effects of mental health. The assignment gave them a first-hand insight into the academic expectations required at the Russell Group universities.
Download and read essays by Selma, Yussuf and Qesser.
Every week students had to meet with their PhD tutor, Dr Theeba, to go over the content that they will need for the assignment and look at the academic expectations required.
What students said...
"The Scholars Program made me evaluate the steps towards my life at university.” Yusuf
"The Brilliant Club has widened my understanding of the social problems today.” Andy
“The Brilliant Club has been a massive help to me as it has helped me improve on writing essays and widened my vocabulary.” Heather
“The Brilliant Club has helped me to write an essay more easily as the assignment has given me confidence to use new vocabulary.” Henry
“My time at the Brilliant Club has given me an insight into university life and what I need to do in order to get there." Qesser

We were very lucky to have some parents attend the ceremony to share in the success of their child.
