Year 7 Students on Their First Term at Secondary School
As we approach the end of the Autumn term, we asked five of our fabulous Year 7 students how the first term of secondary school has been for them. Here's what they told us.
Omar, on making friends...
"I was nervous on my first day and wondered if I’d make friends. Making friends was easy as in the playground there are lots of children who come up to you and say ‘What’s your name’ and and then we play with each other and you become best friends."

Basma on the best and hardest things about secondary school...
"Secondary school is a very big place and the rules are a bit more strict than at primary school. On the first day everybody was very supportive and the teachers were very kind and they helped us to settle in by starting slowly and getting to know everybody. The best thing for me is the wide range of co-curricular activities and things for you to do. I think I’m going to try Cooking Club. The hardest thing is catching up with everything as you get five pieces of homework to do each day. But the teachers are very supportive and explain everything to the last detail."
Zackery, on why he likes the variety of lessons...
"I have a bit of a journey to get here but I’ve developed a schedule so that it works for me. On the first day they didn’t instantly throw us into work but slowly eased us in. We get homework but it’s a good amount and the teachers don’t go overboard on it. The best thing about secondary school is being able to study a broad range of subjects rather than just English, Maths and Science. At the moment we’re doing all kinds of different stuff including Music and Performing Arts and Food Technology and it’s great. The teachers help by taking everything step by step and making sure everyone understands it. The teachers are always there for you if you are having difficulties in school."
Firdaos, on why she wanted to stay here after primary school...
I went to the Harris Garrard primary school and wanted to stay at the same school because I was happy here and I liked the secondary building. I’m enjoying the many different lessons. I was nervous on my first day but at the same time I was really excited to see what it would be like, and meet the teachers. The teachers help by asking us how we feel and telling us if we have any problems we can speak to them. I like the different lessons, especially technology.”
Ade, on a very important topic...
"I like the food. You get more choice of food than in primary. Making friends was easy. The teachers help anyone who needs help. My favourite subject is PE.”
