Alfie is Playground Mega-Chess King
Alfie and Mr Smith went head-to-head on our new playground mega chess board at lunchtime yesterday, and Alfie came out on top.
"My friend reminded me of the rules recently and I'm just starting to get better at it," said Alfie.
"I've played with the mega chess quite a bit. I normally play some of my friends so this was the first time I've played Mr Smith. It was a bit of an achievement for me beating him. I didn't think I'd win because I knew he'd be a challenge."
The giant chess board and pieces are a recent addition to our playground and proving very popular, with people enjoying watching as well as taking part.
Mr Smith is hoping to get more ordinary-sized chess sets for the playground too, and has a vision of seeing lots of students sitting at the tables and playing each other at breaktime. And maybe beating their teachers too?
Chess originated over 1,000 years ago in northern India before spreading to the Muslim world and then to Europe when the Moors conquered Spain. In Europe, the way the pieces moved changed in the 15th century and the modern game starts with these changes.
