Years 4 and 5 Cook on Stage at 'Food Into Fun' Event
On Monday, our school councillors from Year 4 and 5 attended the Fun Into Food session at Dartford Science and Technology College. It was run by the catering company Chartwells, and was a fun, interactive session aiming to get children and young people interested in preparing and cooking food.
First of all we listened to a presentation by the chef, where we were reminded about the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet. We thought about the different food groups and why we need to eat things from each of them: carbohydrates for energy; protein for growth and repair; dairy to keep our bones and teeth strong; fruit and vegetables to keep us healthy.
Then the real fun started! Some children were chosen to take part in the teams that were cooking on stage! They prepared a vegetarian noodle dish to celebrate Chinese New Year. Those of us in the audience were able to cheer everyone on, and enjoy the delicious smells coming from the kitchens. Some people were even lucky enough to taste the food!
Our children demonstrated some excellent cookery skills, and also impressed the chef with their knowledge of Mandarin!
We all had a great time, and hopefully the children all feel inspired to go home and develop their culinary creativity.
