Year 6 go to Dorset - Full Report
We have been so lucky this Autumn term in Year 6 to leave the classrooms behind and explore our learning of World War II, leaving London, like evacuees did during the war. Packed up with three days of belongings we headed out into the great unknown….the Dorset countryside and the historic Hooke Court.
We had such a great time we decided to make a short film about our adventures (see below). Hope you enjoy it!
Over the course of our trip the students learnt to break German Codes, explore the local flora and fauna, cook exciting meals and even celebrate our own VE day with a fabulous victory meal cooked by the students themselves under WW2 rationing conditions.
Much of the learning however was more personal for the students. For many of them this was their first taste of independence. They were responsible for themselves, their belongings and how they conducted themselves in the wider community. Being Garrard students, they did not let us down. Both the staff that went with them at those at the phenomenal Hooke Court commented on the wonderful behaviour and understanding of WWII present in our students.
Our students thrived under the high expectations and were able to explore a completely different environment than the one we are used to in Thamesmead.
Next year we will once again be exploring the world outside the classrooms with our new Year 6s who I’m sure by looking at these pictures will be already becoming excited to join this wonderful opportunity.
